What is Pocket Captions?
Live captions for face-to-face conversations. Put your iPhone between you and Pocket Captions shows what people say as they say it, which can make a conversation easier to follow. It saves the conversation on your phone and turns it into a transcript with timestamped notes, ready to export as PDF, Word, Markdown or text.
Captions can be wrong or miss words, so check anything important with the person you're talking to. Pocket Captions is not for emergencies or phone calls, not a replacement for a professional interpreter, and not a medical device.
Live captions
How do live captions work?
Speech recognition runs entirely on your iPhone, using Apple's on-device speech engine. Captions appear while people talk; when you stop, Pocket Captions writes a more careful transcript from the saved audio. The first time, your iPhone may download Apple's speech model for your language. After that, live captions, transcription, notes and export work with no internet connection.
Which languages are supported?
English, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch and Korean. You can switch the language for the app and its live captions in the app.
How do I get the best captions?
Accuracy depends mostly on how clearly your phone can hear the person speaking. Put the phone between you, close to whoever is talking, with the microphone uncovered. Distance, background noise, echo and several people talking at once all make captions less accurate, and unusual names often come out wrong. The saved transcript is always editable.
Privacy & data
Where are my conversations stored?
On your iPhone. Recognition runs on-device and your audio stays on your phone: it is never uploaded, to us or to anyone. Transcripts and notes stay on your device too, with one exception you control: if you turn on Transcript Polish & Naming, transcript text is sent for cleanup and naming, without being stored by our server. Your account holds only your sign-in and subscription, never your conversations. Details are in our Privacy Policy.
Because Pocket Captions saves what people say, let the people you're talking with know that you're captioning and saving the conversation.
Why do I need an account?
Sign in with Apple ties your subscription to you so it can be restored on a new phone. That's all the account does.
Subscription
What does Pocket Captions Pro include?
A Pro subscription unlocks Pocket Captions. There's a weekly plan and a yearly plan, and current prices are always shown on the subscribe screen before you're charged. Payment is handled by Apple through your Apple ID.
I already paid. How do I restore my purchase?
Tap Restore Purchases on the subscribe screen, or in Settings inside the app, while signed in with the same Apple ID you purchased with.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, then choose Pocket Captions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to avoid renewal. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription.
Your account
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Profile → Delete Account. Your account is deleted straight away, and you have 30 days to sign back in and restore it before your account data is permanently deleted. Conversations on your phone are not affected; delete any conversation from the library to remove its audio, transcript and notes from your phone.
